School Info
The city of Freeport began in 1830 when settlers were drawn to the natural harbor near the confluence between the Choctawhatchee Bay and River. The settlement grew as river traffic between Pensacola and other population centers up the Choctawhatchee River increased. The settlement earned the name "Freeport" as river traffic was not charged a fee to dock at the port (freeportflorida.gov).
A six-room elementary school was founded in Freeport in 1943. During this time, students attending high school travelled to Walton High School in Defuniak Springs. Freeport Senior High School was founded in 1964. Originally it served not only the students of Freeport, but also the students of South Walton as it was the only secondary school in the area. The original graduating class featured 29 students. Until 1987, Freeport served grades K-12. Freeport Elementary begin serving grades K-6 in 1987, leaving Freeport High School to serve grades 7-12. In 2001, a separate Freeport High School campus was constructed, creating the first middle grades Freeport Middle School (FMS). FMS continued with the branded Bulldog legacy. Currently, FMS serves grades 5-8. In 2024, FMS moved into their new school building at 160 Victory Blvd. FMS is home to roughly 780 students and 78 staff members. We look forward to you joining our Freeport Community and becoming a part of our Bulldog legacy! GO BULLDOGS!
